Our Amish Craftsmen Build to Order

In the summer of 1841, the first Amish families arrived in Indiana, bringing with them a culture rich in tradition, simplicity, and superb craftsmanship.  They quickly became well known for impeccable workmanship in the construction of furniture that is comfortable, functional, and built to last for generations.

Olde Oak Tree has plugged into this reputation for quality by establishing relationships with over 45 Amish builders of skillfully crafted hardwood furniture in Indiana and Ohio.  These vendors range in size from small 2-man shops to nearly 100 employees.  Some of them multi-generational and family builders, they utilize the best of traditional furniture-making practices and time-honored construction techniques blended with the newest innovations, such as dove-tailed drawer boxes, mortise and tenon joints, premium full-extension side-track ball-bearing rollers, and all hardwood construction. There is no particle board used in any of their construction, everything is glued and/or screwed together, not stapled.  The hardwood plywood backs are inset and screwed in place for optimum structural integrity.

Furniture has come so far since 1841 as these craftsmen have kept up with the times offering every style and era of furniture design, including Arts and Crafts, Shaker, traditional, contemporary, and French Country, with its whitewash and white wood stains and two-tone looks. Mission style has been the Olde Oak Tree’s best seller with its straight lines and “clean” modern look.  Shaker has become more contemporary, especially when combined with black or dark espresso finishes. Paint is also popular with different degrees of distressing available for painted or stained wood.  A variety of wood species are available, which include Cherry, Maple, Oak, Hickory, and quarter-sawn Oak.  Olde Oak Tree’s relationship with their builders enables them to offer looks exclusively for you.  Customers often arrive seeking furniture to fit a particular space and are thrilled to find pieces can be built to order with just a few minor adjustments or start with a completely new design created to their taste.

Olde Oak Tree began in 2001 when a small, existing store was purchased and renamed by the current owners, Larry and Lora Schnurr.  Within a year, it was expanded to two stories and 6000 square feet.  Olde Oak Tree offers the knowledge, experience, quality and service you would expect from a locally family-owned and operated business. Larry has 25 years in the furniture industry and says, “Our customers are our friends and continue to return for new purchases year after year. I don’t want to be huge, because then I can’t personally serve my customers.  I want to compete with a quality piece of furniture at a fair price.
